MonaLisa Touch Q & A

What is vulvar vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy is a common medical condition that often goes unreported. Vaginal atrophy is both chronic and progressive and tends to occur when your estrogen declines, often with menopause. There’s no way to resolve vaginal atrophy without treatment.

Symptoms of vaginal atrophy include:

  • Paling color of vaginal tissue
  • Development of ridges and folds in your vagina
  • Diminished pubic hair
  • Clitoral tissue shrinkage
  • Lack of elasticity and flexibility
  • Decreased vaginal blood flow and lubrication
  • Vaginal tissue bruising

To accurately diagnose vaginal atrophy, Dr. Snell-Hargrove reviews your medical history and completes a comprehensive physical examination.

The symptoms of vaginal atrophy cause discomfort and cause problems with arousal and orgasm, resulting in diminished sex drive. Severe cases of vaginal atrophy also affect your choices of both clothing and exercise options.

What is MonaLisa Touch?

MonaLisa Touch is a vaginal laser treatment that effectively remodels your vaginal wall and causes it to grow thicker, stronger, and more elastic. Tiny holes in your vaginal lining help improve healthy tissue growth and new blood flow.

When you see Dr. Snell-Hargrove for a MonaLisa Touch treatment, she applies a numbing cream to your vaginal opening. She then inserts a probe into your vagina which delivers gentle, painless laser energy to the walls of your vagina, stimulating a healing response.

The MonaLisa Touch process requires three treatments given in six-week intervals. Each session lasts approximately five minutes.

What are the benefits of MonaLisa Touch?

Dr. Snell-Hargrove performs MonaLisa Touch on women for whom vaginal estrogen isn’t an option, including women who haven’t responded to estrogen therapies and those who’ve had treatment for breast or ovarian cancer.

Additionally, Dr. Snell-Hargrove uses MonaLisa Touch to treat lichen sclerosis, a chronic condition that causes thinning and irritation of the vulvar skin, along with both urinary incontinence and urgency.
